TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL ON-CAMPUS RECRUITING

Cultivate relationships with faculty and staff.

Recruiters say that good relationships with faculty and staff, particularly from Career Services, leads to good relationships with students. Other recruiters emphasize the importance of being on campus, in person. By volunteering for in-service programs or other special events, recruiters can establish a presence and build trust with college personnel and students before active recruiting takes place.

Faculty members from our various academic disciplines are also available for lunch meetings, our office can assist you with these arrangements. We ask that you let us know of these your plans at least two weeks before your scheduled visit so arrangements can be made. Understand your potential hires and their environment.

Many of students from UTPA are first generation students with close ties to their families. Understanding more about our unique and talented student population can go a long way for an organization trying to increase their presence on campus. Career Services will gladly provide you with important statistical information about our student population and information can also be obtained by contacting the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at 956/665-2383.

Get involved.

Career fairs, information sessions, and scheduled interviewing makes up just a small portion of opportunities for getting noticed by students. Other strategies include making classroom presentations; speaking at student association meetings; and getting involved with professional and scholarly student groups, honor societies, and fraternities and sororities. Monetary contributions—even small donations toward pizza parties—can also put a company in a positive light.

Additionally, offering part-time, non-degreed jobs or internships and cooperative education opportunities can promote an organization. Experiential education allows students to obtain work experience and companies get a feel for student competencies.

Hand-outs and/or Fliers

University policy prohibits advertising and/or distribution of information without proper approval. Our office would be more than happy to work with you in distributing your announcements and ensure they meet the university requirements. These are displayed in various buildings and the University Library prior to your on-campus visit. These materials can also be made available to departments across campus upon your request.

Advertising

The Pan American is the official student newspaper of The University of Texas-Pan American. The publication is distributed every Thursday during the regular Fall and Spring semesters.
