Purpose

To describe the process for creating manual VPN access accounts on the Cisco VPN3000 series concentrator and to describe relevant background information.

Scope

For IT networking personnel tasked with the responsibility of managing the Cisco VPN3000 series concentrator.

Prerequisites

Authorization to create a VPN account must be received from the IT Security Department. Need a web browser capable of accessing the UTPA 129.113.248.x VPN client subnet. Need the administrator user id and password for the VPN3000 concentrator device.

Responsibilities

IT Networking personnel trained on basic management of the Cisco VPN3000 concentrator. Personnel must be trusted to generate User Ids and passwords that will be distributed to VPN clients who must have a manually created local VPN account.

Procedure

1. Using a web browser, attach to the Cisco VPN concentrator via its IP address: 129.113.248.2.
2. Sign on using the administrator user id and password for the concentrator.
3. Click on “Configuration” -> “User Management” -> “Users” on the left hand section of the web page. 
4. Then click on the “User” button to open the dialog page for adding local (manual) VPN user accounts. 
5. Type in a NEW user id (one that does not already exist on the concentrator and the password for this new account (password must be entered twice for verification purposes). 

1. Follow UTPA standard password specifications in generating this password. 

6. Then click the “Add” button to update the local user database with this new user id. 

1. If additional user ids need to be created, follow the preceding steps for each new user id. 

7. After all ids have been created, click the “Save” icon to permanently save your changes. 

• If you do not do this step, the new user ids will be lost upon power loss or reboot by the concentrator.  When done, click on “logout” to sign off the concentrator.
