Identify and define frequently used terms. Provide additional and/or relevant information needed to understand this SOP.
Access Point – a base station in a wireless network which transmits signals much like a cell phone tower but for much shorter distances, typically within a floor or building. This is the device that allows wireless laptops and other wireless enabled devices to join a network and communicate with the world.
Cable certification – the process of testing both fiber and copper cabling to verify or certify that it meets basic industry standards for signal loss, wire map, cross talk, etc.
Campus telecommunication standards – a list of predefined standards describing color schemes for jacks, face plates, cabling, equipment (switches and routers), etc.
Fiber/copper cable plant – describes building cabling installation including raceways, ladder, cable trays, wire managers, etc.
Network equipment – refers to devices such as switches and routers.
Punch list – list of items either not finished or not done correctly needing action on the part of the contractor.
Telecommunication infrastructure – describes the individual components of a telecommunication system such as cabling, cable tray and ladder, cable managers, equipment racks, patch panels, conduits, cable connectors and wall outlets, etc.
Wireless site survey – the process of determining best wireless access point (transmitter) placement within a building space to maximize signal strength and coverage. This process requires the use of equipment for the measurement of signal strength and coverage throughout the building.
