Name: Use of FTP

Purpose

The goal of this procedure is to successfully ensure that a UTPA web site is adhering to Accessibility standards (Section 508, WCAG – Priority I, II) .s.

Scope

This procedure is intended for all current UTPA students, staff and faculty that currently have access to publish on the main university web server.

Prerequisites

A viable UTPA e-mail Account must be in existence (in order to be able to access the server).  Also, UTPA students, staff and faculty must be given publish privileges to their respective web site.  For assistance, contact the Internet Services department: webhelp@utpa.edu

Procedure

    Choose method of transferring files

    1. Web Browser
    2. FTP software
  1. Web Browser File Transfer
    1. Browse to http://www.utpa.edu/
    2. Change HTTP protocol to FTP in web address ftp://www.utpa.edu/
    3. Go to the FTP address
    4. Enter username specifying domain: utpa\username
    5. Enter password
    6. Navigate to your web site folder
    7. Files may be dragged from the browser window to a local folder
  2. Install FTP client if not using a web browser
    For PC
    1. Install open source (free) FTP, SFTP, and SCP client WinSCP by downloading the installation package (exe)http://winscp.net/download/winscp407setup.exe
    For MAC
    1. Install Cyberduck FTP and SFTP browser for Mac OS X: http://cyberduck.ch/Cyberduck-2.8.4.dmg. For older OS (Operating System) versions, consult download.com http://www.download.com/FTP/3150-2151_4-0.html?tag=dlbc
    2. Alternative free open source FTP clients include FileZilla http://filezilla-project.org, and Fugu http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/
  3. Using the FTP Client Program
    1. For WinSCP for PC at the WinSCP Login dialog enter the session host name www.utpa.edu, port 21, domain\username such as utpa\username, password, and the transfer protocol FTP
    2. Click Login
    3. Navigate to your web site folder
    4. Folders and files are displayed similar to Windows Explorer and may be manipulated in the same manner as local folders and files

  • WinSCP – WinSCP is an open source free SFTP client and FTP client for Windows.
  • Cyberduck - Cyberduck is an open source FTP and SFTP (SSH Secure File Transfer) browser licensed under the GPL with an easy to use interface, integration with external editors and support for many Mac OS X system technologies.
  • FTP – In computing, the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a network protocol used to transfer data from one computer to another through a network, such as over the Internet.
  • SFTP - In computing, the SSH File Transfer Protocol or SFTP is a network protocol that provides file transfer and manipulation functionality over any reliable data stream. It is typically used with the SSH-2 protocol (TCP port 22) to provide secure file transfer, but is intended to be usable with other protocols as well.
  • SCP - Secure Copy or SCP is a means of securely transferring computer files between a local and a remote host or between two remote hosts, using the Secure Shell (SSH) protocol.
  • PC - A personal computer (PC) is a computer whose original sales price, size, and capabilities make it useful for individuals, intended to be operated directly by an end user, with no intervening computer operator.
  • MAC - Macintosh, or for newer models, Mac, is a brand name which covers several lines of personal computers designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc.
  • OS - An operating system (OS) is the software that manages the sharing of the resources of a computer and provides programmers with an interface used to access those resources.
  • Open Source - Open source is a set of principles and practices on how to write software, the most important of which is that the source code is openly available.
  • GPL - The GNU General Public License (GNU GPL or simply GPL) is a widely used free software license.
