Frequently Asked Questions
Files Stripped from Email Messages
Question: Why are certain file attachments stripped from mail coming into my UTPA.EDU/PANAM.EDU inbox?
Answer: The reason your files are getting stripped is because the email server is set up to strip file types that are most commonly associated with viruses, worms, trojans, etc. Most infections get into the University computer system through users clicking on infected attachments in email messages that either come from outside sources or from infected users within the University. Stripping the files allows us to be able to prevent this from happening by restricting certain file extensions in attachments from going through.
Here is a list of file extensions that are currently stripped:
- .zip
- .vbs
- .vbp
- .exe
- .bat
- .com
- .hta
- .ink
- .pif
- .scr
Question: Will UTPA cease file stripping any time soon?
Answer: It's hard to tell at this particular point in time. Over the past few years, the threat to computer systems by viruses, worms, hackers, etc., has increased astronomically. File stripping is seen as a preventative measure against such attacks. If there comes a time that system checks show complete protection, then the matter will be readdressed.
Question: Is there any sort of work-around to get my files through to a receipient with a UTPA.EDU/PANAM.EDU email address?
Answer: Yes there is. In order to do this first of all, you must be able to view the extensions on all file types. They are hidden by default. Here are some steps to show you how to do this:
Disclaimer from the UTPA Information Security Office
Please use caution when renaming files to be sent through email. If the file is infected, you will risk spreading it to multiple users. Also note that email isn't the recommended medium for sending files, due to file size restrictions of 5MB and the possibility of spreading viruses and other infections.
1. In My Computer, click on Tools, then select Folder Options:

3. On the Folder Options screen, click on the View tab and scroll down until you see the Hide extensions for known file types check box. Make sure to uncheck it, then hit Apply and OK:

You will now be able to view the file extensions on your system.
Renaming the file extension:
As an example, in order to attach a .zip file, rename the extension to .piz by right clicking on the file and selecting Rename. The icon for the file will change from
to
. You will now be able to attach the file and send it through the email system without it getting stripped. Once the person receives the email, they must download the file to their computer and rename the file back to its original name. The icon will also revert back to the original once it's renamed. The file is now ready to be opened.
