The primary purpose of the work study programs, both federal and state, is to provide part-time employment (average of 12 hours week) to students who demonstrate financial need in order to defray the cost of higher education. The work study programs provide equal employment opportunities for students without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex or age.
The work study pay rate will be at least the current federal minimum wage. UTPA pays work study students directly once a month. Work Study awards do not directly or automatically pay any tuition and fees.
The amount a student receives in wages cannot exceed the total Federal Work Study amount awarded. The employer considers the student's class schedule when preparing the student's work schedule.
UTPA Work Study Students get to choose where they interview and subsequently where they will work. The job search is conducted online at

Students must complete the Work Study Orientation at
https://finaid.utpa.edu/wsorientation/.
Note: In order for students to be able to complete the online orientation, they must have a work study award in an accepted status. Students must allow one business day after accepting the award to get access to the online orientation.
Students may not begin their job search until they have attended the online work study orientation. After three business days of completing and passing the quiz for the online orientation, students will be able to begin their job search. The job search is conducted online at

Any Returning WS interested in switching WS jobs must meet with the WS Coordinator prior to gaining access to the job search website. Please contact the Work Study Office at 956-381-2408 for more information.
