Excellence Scholarships
The UTPA Excellence Scholarships are funded through a variety of memorials and endowments. While the criteria for receiving these scholarships and the amounts of the awards vary, all eligible students are encouraged to apply.
The University scholarship committee selects the recipients on a competitive basis, and funds are administered though the Student Financial Services Office. Scholarships are not renewable and students must apply every year.
The criteria for these scholarships are as follows:

Most are available to all majors with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.5 and full-time enrollment status

Available to Undergraduate and Graduate students

Most require US citizenship or legal permanent resident status. However, International students are still encouraged to apply.

Awards vary depending on funds.

Recipients are selected on a competitive basis.

Scholarships are not automatically renewable; students must re-apply each year

Priority is given to students who have not received an institutional scholarship

University Scholars - Distinguished Achievement Program
Entering freshmen from who have earned college credit through Advanced Placement (AP) examinations and/or the Concurrent Enrollment (CE) program at The University of Texas-Pan American, or are an International Baccalaureate Diploma recipient, may qualify for a four-year renewable scholarship, valued at $24,000 or $16,000, at the University of Texas Pan American and the special designation of being a “University, Scholar.”
Initial Award Guidelines
To be eligible to become a University Scholar, you must be an entering freshman who meets the criteria for regular admission and has graduated from a public or private school (or home school).
Scholarship Qualification Criteria
You can qualify for the University Scholars Scholarship by meeting the initial award guidelines and fulfilling one of the following requirements while in high school:
- Must have 4 courses (total of 12 hours) of AP credit and /or CE credit earned at UTPA with a B or better in each course (from four separate exams or course in different subject areas; credit must include both English 1301 or higher and Math 1340* or higher) AND have a minimum ACT 24 composite or a minimum SAT score of 1090
OR
- Be an International Baccalaureate Diploma recipient AND have a minimum ACT 24 composite or a minimum SAT score of 1090
*For business majors, Math 1321 or higher is acceptable.
Note: For students with 30+ACT who have English 1301 and 1302 waived, they must still take Math 1340 plus 9 hours with a B or better in different subject areas.
How to Apply
The University Scholars Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis. To ensure you are considered for this scholarship, you must do the following:
- Submit an Entering Freshmen Application for Admission to The University of Texas-Pan American and be admitted by the priority deadlines below.
- Submit an official high school transcript to the UTPA Office of Undergraduate Admissions, which must include ACT or SAT scores, GPA (on a 100 point scale), and rank and class size (at time of application).
- Request your AP scores (if applicable) be sent directly to UTPA.

Students who complete the Admissions application process by the priority deadline will be notified if selected via mail by the Scholarship Office.

UTPA Transfer Scholarships
The University of Texas-Pan American is committed to assisting our transfer students in finding additional sources of funds to finance their education.
Transfer students may be eligible to apply for a Transfer Scholarship. For a list of available scholarships, eligibility criteria and application deadlines, please view the list of Transfer Scholarships on the Admissons and New Student Services website.

Men and women from the Rio Grande Valley serve as soldiers in the U.S. Armed Forces all over the world. Many of them become heroes by giving their own life in service of their country. The University of Texas-Pan American honors the spirit, sacrifice, and commitment of our service men and women who paid the ultimate price in preserving democracy.
To honor the fallen Valley Heroes who served our country in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan UTPA has established the UTPA Valley Heroes Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to selected veteran students who have honorably served our country in active duty.
The fallen Valley Heroes are an inspiration to generations of Americans, who through their dedication and sacrifice secure freedom and democracy for all.
To apply for the scholarship you must (have):
- Be an undergraduate student
- 3.0+ GPA (if returning or transfer student)
- Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours)
- Honorably served a minimum of 6 months of active duty
- 20+ ACT or 930 SAT (if Entering Freshmen)
Award amount is $1000 ($500 for fall and $500 for spring) for one year.
Deadline for the 2010-2011 Academic year is May 1st, 2010.
