Academic Competitiveness Grants

Important Notice: The Federal Government will no longer be funding the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) starting with 2011-2012 academic year; consequently, this program will be discontinued effective June 30, 2011.



The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) is a grant offered to freshmen and sophmores who successfully completed a rigorous high school program and graduated as "Recommended or Distinguished" as determined by the state or state education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Students must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) for the current academic year and meet other qualifications to be considered eligible for this grant.

 

Eligible Student must be:

  • Pell eligible for current year,
  • Be U.S. citizen; effective July 1, 2009 non-citizens may be eligible 
  • Be enrolled at least half-time; effective July 1, 2009 students enrolled at least half time may be eligible 
  • Be enrolled in a degree program
  • Students must have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Assistance


First year students must have graduated from high school on or after January 1, 2006. Second year students must have graduated from high school after January 1, 2005.


  • First year students who qualify may receive up to $750 for the first academic year
  • Second year students may receive $1300 if GPA is 3.0 or higher on a scale of 4.0

 

Academic Competitiveness Grant for First Year Students: ACG YR1

 Academic Competitiveness Grant Year 1 is offered to entering freshman who have completed a rigorous high school program and graduated “Recommended or Distinguished”.

First year students who qualify for ACG Year 1 may receive up to $750 for the first academic year, however this amount is pro-rated by semester and by enrollment status.

  • Full time - $750 ($375 per semester)
  • Three quarter time - $563, ($282 for first semester and $281 for second semester)
  • Half time - $375 ($188 for first semester and $187 for second semester)

If at any time upon review of student records, the grant maybe canceled or reduced based on previous awards at UTPA or other institutions.

In addition, official high school transcripts are needed indicating completion of a rigorous high school program prior to disbursement.

 

Academic Competitiveness Grant for Second Year Students: ACGYR2

Academic Competitiveness Grant Year 2 is offered to students who have successfully completed their first- year and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Second Year students, who qualify for ACG2, may receive up to $1,300 for the second academic year, however this amount is pro-rated by semester and by enrollment status.

  • Full time - $1300 ($650 per semester)
  • Three quarter time - $975 ($488 for first semester and $487 for second semester)
  • Half time - $650 ($325 per semester)

In addition, official high school transcripts are needed indicating completion of a rigorous high school program prior to disbursement unless ACG YR1 was disbursed at UTPA previously.

If at any time upon review of student's records, grant may be cancelled or reduced based on previous awards at UTPA or other institutions.
