How to initiate services
To schedule an intake appointment with a clinical therapist, call (956)665-2574 or come by the center in UC 109. Students experiencing an immediate life-threatening crisis in which they are in danger or someone they are concerned about is in danger of harming oneself or someone else are encouraged to walk-in for services. After hours, students experiencing a crisis are urged to go to the nearest hospital emergency room, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or call 911. Students experiencing a crisis after hours may also call Tropical Texas Center for MHMR's 24-hour phone line at 1-877-289-7199.
When you request an appointment, you will be directed to a therapist or a counseling intern for triage in which you will be asked a series of standard questions so that we may assess how best we can assist you. If you have a particular therapist in mind, let the triage evaluator know. Because of the need to triage, CaPS will not be scheduling for initial appointments via e-mail.
Keep in mind that during busy times throughout the semester, you may have to wait two or more weeks before your scheduled appointment.
If you arrive to your appointment 20 or more minutes late, you may be asked to reschedule your appointment for another time to ensure you have adequate time with the therapist for a full session.
