How to initiate services
To schedule an intake appointment with a clinical therapist, call (956)381-2574 or e-mail counseling@utpa.edu. Students experiencing an immediate life-threatening crisis in which they are in danger or someone they are concerned about is in danger of harming oneself or someone else are encouraged to walk-in for services. After hours, students experiencing a crisis are urged to go to the nearest hospital emergency room, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or call 911. Students experiencing a crisis after hours may also call Tropical Texas Center for MHMR's 24-hour phone line at 956-289-7000.
When you call the Counseling and Psychological Services, you may simply tell the receptionist that you'd like to schedule an appointment for counseling and let her know your preferred days and times. If you have a particular therapist in mind, let the receptionist know so that you can be connected with that therapist to schedule. If you choose to request an appointment by e-mail, please be sure to include in your request your preferred days and time for an appointment, contact information, and student ID number. Please also note that e-mail cannot be guaranteed to be a confidential means of communication.
During busy times throughout the semester, you may have to wait up to a week or two before your scheduled appointment.
If you arrive to your appointment 20 or more minutes late, you may be asked to reschedule your appointment for another time to ensure you have adequate time with the therapist for a full session.
