Curriculum

Curriculum Picture

The Child Development Center implements the High Scope Approach Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers and Preschool. The curriculum is planned on a weekly basis for each group. Our program addresses the needs of the whole child, taking into account all of their developmental needs: physical, social, emotional and cognitive. Because not all children share the same interests, it is in the best interest of the child to allow them to make choices throughout the day regarding their choice of activities. The curriculum will be integrated throughout the classroom. Weekly lessons will be introduced through stories during group time, then carried out through art projects, games, songs and play. For information visit www.highscope.org.

Infants (3 months - 17 months) Picture

Infants (3 months - 17 months)

Infants learn by experiencing the environment through their senses by physically moving around and through social interaction. Non-mobile infants absorb and organize a great deal of information about the world around them with the assistance of the infant teacher. Infant teachers will talk and sing to the children about what is happening in the world around them. The most appropriate teaching technique for this age group is to give ample opportunities for children to use repetition to practice newly acquired skills and to experience feelings of autonomy and success. The infant teacher’s priority is to provide a sense of security and trust for the infant by responding to his/her individual needs of hunger, thirst and sleep with a flexible and individualized daily routine.

Toddlers (18 months - 35 months) Picture

Toddlers (18 months - 35 months)

At this age, the children are very mobile and active using all five senses to discover the world. The children tend to respond well to a regular daily routine with clear meal, rest and play times. Important independent skills are being acquired during these years, including personal care such as toilet training, feeding and dressing. Toddlers are also acquiring social skills and are producing language rapidly. Activities are designed with the developmental level of each child in mind. The children will be provided with simple picture books, puzzles, music and time and space for active play. They will be provided with opportunities to engage in a variety of activities designed to promote the growing independence desired by toddlers. Toilet training will be provided when appropriate.

Preschool (3 years - 4 years) Picture

Preschool (3 years - 4 years)

Preschool children have a greater capacity than younger children for learning, therefore appropriate activities are planned to allow for a variety of experiences. The activities will be planned to emphasize the children’s social, emotional, intellectual and physical development. The learning environment will provide for social interaction and role playing in the dramatic area; imagination and creativity in the art area; discovery and exploration in the science area; construction and math skills in the block area; intellectual stimulation through story time, songs, participation in the library area; and fine-to-gross motor development with participation in cutting, tearing, drawing, lacing, dancing, hopping, skipping, running, climbing and much more.
