Upward Bound Math and Science eligibility criteria
- Meet income guidelines and/or be potential first - generation college students
- Show potential for success in a post - secondary institution in the areas of math, science, and engineering
- Be attending one of three target high schools: Donna High School, Weslaco East High School, or Progreso High School
- Be in the 9th or 10th grade
Move Towards a Worthwhile Goal
The Upward Bound Math and Science Center is a federally funded TRiO Program designed to help participants strengthen their math, science and engineering skills, as well as recognize and develop their potential to excel in those areas. The program seeks to motivate students for success in education beyond high school. We want our students to dare to achieve.
PROGRAM SERVICES
- Summer programs of intensive math, science and engineering training
- Exposure to University faculty who do research in those areas.
- Participant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of a faculty member or graduate student serving as the participant'smentor.
- College Prep, summer academic enhancement classes, and college / educational field trips
- Summer residential component
- Computer training
- Year round academic counseling and advisement
- Team building, leadership, and bonding activities
SUMMER COMPONENT
Mornings are devoted to academic courses in the areas of English Literature, English Composition, Mathematics, Foreign Language, and study skills.
Afternoons and evenings will also include tutorial sessions, team building, leadership skills training, and recreational activities.
An educational field trip will be taken during the summer component.
This 5-6 week summer component will consist of two to three weeks of commuting to the UTPA campus with transportation provided by targeted schools and three weeks of residence on the UTPA campus.
