Meet the Staff


The CAMP staff is committed to serving all students in a positive manner. We encourage students to be the best they can be in all areas of their lives, especially in school. WE ARE HERE TO SERVE YOU. We are here to assist you in achieving your goals and in helping to make your educational experience at UTPA and CAMP a positive and productive one.
 

Director - Jaime Miranda Mr. Miranda coordinates the College Assistance Migrant Program and the many services provided to all participants. He is available to answer questions regarding CAMP eligibility requirements, student stipends, scholarship sources and financial aid. He represents CAMP students and staff at State and National HEP/CAMP meetings as well as at RGV community events. Mr. Miranda is a native of the Rio Grande Valley & grew up picking citrus fruit in the surrounding areas with his family.   He has worked as an Advisor for the Educational Talent Search Program & Coordinator for the Upward Bound Porgram, both at UTPA.  Email: mirandaj@utpa.edu

Maritza Jimenez Academic Career Advisor – Maritza Jimenez the Academic Career Advisor, assists and advises students with their academic/educational plans, financial aid applications and coordinates the tutoring component of the CAMP program. The Advisor is available to assist CAMP students and CAMP Alumni in preparing their individual educational plans, discussing class selection which meets their core curriculum and degree plan requirements, reviewing academic progress (grades) and assist with class registration. The Acadmic Career Advisor also coordinates the CAMP internship component. Counseling Specialist – Sandra Garza Ms. Garza provides both personal and group counseling to CAMP participants. She facilitates the weekly Life Skills Seminar for CAMP students. She is available to assist CAMP students and CAMP Alumni with writitng their resumes, personal and group counseling, financial aid application assistance and scholarship search information. Ms. Garza also coordinates many of the CAMP off-campus student enrichment events.  Email: sgarzaz1@utpa.edu
Administrative Assistant – Gloria Sandoval Ms. Sandoval manages the CAMP main office and supervises the clerical part-time staff.  She assists the CAMP Director with reconciling the budget and distribution of student stipends. She is available to assist CAMP students and CAMP alumni with personal data updates and referrals to CAMP staff and University offices for needed services. Email: gsandoval4@utpa.edu
Admissions Counselor – Guillermo Avilez Mr. Avilez is a CAMP Alumni & the CAMP Admissions Counselor responsible for the outreach and recruitment of CAMP students. He coordinates presentations to students, counselors, teachers, parents and community organizations. Mr. Avilez also serves as the Advisor for the Association of Migrant Students (AMS), a student organization on campus for migrant and seasonal farmworkers. He is available to assist migrant & seasonal farmworker applicants with admissions and financial aid questions pertaining to both CAMP and The University of Texas – Pan American. Office Aides

The CAMP office aides are available to help our students with making copies, and other office requests.  most of our aides are CAMP alumni and can also serve as role-models and mentors to our students. This semester our office aides are: Iris- front office , Vacant- front office, Vacant -front office, Thalia Cortez-Counseling Office, Antonia Nervaez- Recruitment Assistant and Yesenia Obregon-CAMP Data Entry Specialist.

Tutors & Mentors

The CAMP tutors for this semster are: Juan Cano, Prsicilla, Isabel Zepeda, Misty Diaz, Vanessa Diaz, Ramiro Atilano, Jorge Lucatero, Miriam Pruneda, and Alejandra Cabrera. CAMP tutors are available to students for individual tutoring sessions as well as group tutoring sessions.  CAMP tutors also serve a mentors to students.  Student requiring help with term papers and writing assigments can see Cristian Velazquez who is a tutor from the UTPA Writing Center assigned to meet with CAMP students on Thursdays at the CAMP Center.    

Collegiate G-Force Mentors

CGF Mentors are available to meet with our residential students and new CAMP applicants.  These mentors are funded through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.  This semester we have 2 CGF mentors: Ms. April Villarreal, and Mr. Cecilio Rivas.
