National HistoryThe High School Equivalency Program and the College Assistance Migrant Program (HEP-CAMP) have existed since 1967 and 1972 respectively. The HEP helps migrant students who have dropped out of high school get their GED. CAMP assists migrant students in their first year of college with academic, personal, and financial support. Since their inception, both programs have achieved stunning success rates. In the 1998-1999 academic year, 73 percent of the HEP participants received their GEDs while 88 percent of the CAMP students successfully completed their first year of college. Overall, nearly three-quarters of all CAMP students graduate with baccalaureate degrees. The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) was not funded at the University of Texas – Pan American from Fall 1987 to Spring 1999. The Office of Migrant Education awarded a five year grant to the University of Texas-Pan American for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) in the Spring of 1999 for entering freshmen to begin attendance during the 1999-2000 academic year. The CAMP program is funded to serve 70 students from migrant and seasonal farmworker families per year. It was located in the Lamar West Building for the first three years of the grant and will be moved onto central campus during the Fall 2002 term. Throughout its history at the University of Texas – Pan American, CAMP has provided positive academic support for students from migrant and seasonal farmworker families. The CAMP staff has witnessed the maturity; personal growth; and academic achievement of countless students. It is with PRIDE that CAMP continues to build a FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE with our students on the University of Texas – Pan American campus.
