Freshmen Transfer Graduate International Re-Admission

Transfer to UTPA!

Student who are enrolled or have enrolled at another college/university of higher education after high school graduation are considered transfer students, and must fulfill transfer admission requirements.

Transfer admission requirements

Applicants seeking transfer admission should submit the following documents by the published deadline to be considered to admission.

1. Apply Texas Application

On-line version of the Apply Texas Application for Transfer Admission. Complete pages 1-4 and 7-8. No application fee is required.

2. Official college/university transcripts

To complete your application, you must submit official transcripts of all completed coursework by the closing date of the application period. Including transcripts from colleges/universities where dual credit was earned prior to high school graduation. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 is required. Transcripts must include the official seal of the college/university or a signature of a college/university official. Updated transcripts for courses enrolled in at the time of application should be submitted as soon as possible after coursework is completed. Copies of transcript and faxes are considered unofficial.

3. Official high school transcripts

Transfer applicants with fewer than 30 hours at time of application to UTPA should submit a final high school transcript.

4. ACT or SAT Scores

Transfer applicants with fewer than 30 hours at time of application to UTPA should submit ACT or SAT scores.

5. Texas Success Initiative Exam or exemption

Test scores from approved TSI exams or TSI exemption is required to determine placement (TSI scores are not required as a basis for admission). TSI scores are required prior to attending academic advisement and transfer orientation.

TSI exemptions

Students who do not meet one of the following exemptions must take THEA (or an approved alternate exam: (ACCUPLACER, COMPASS & ASSET) prior to enrolling.

You may be exempt from taking THEA if you have

An associate’s degree or higher from an accredited Texas public institution.

A minimum ACT composite of 23, English score of 19 and Math scored of 19 from the same test date (national exam, not older than 5 years), or

A minimum Scholastic Assessment Test-SAT total of 1070, Verbal score of 500 and Math score of 500 from the same test date (national exam, not older than 5 years, or

TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) Reading ELA score of 2200, with writing score of 3 and Math score of 2200, (11th grade exit level exam.)

Military exemption applies to students serving or who have served in the U.S. Armed forces, Texas National Guard or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces and has been serving on active duty at least 3 years before enrolling or was honorable discharged, retired or released from active duty.

Transfer applicants that do not meet one of the following exemptions must take THEA or one of the following approved alternate exams: ACCUPLACER, COMPASS or ASSET prior to enrolling. To schedule a TSI examination please contact University Testing Services. You may also call them at 956/292-7585.

Transfer of Undergraduate Credits

Applicants for transfer admissions should submit official transcripts from each institution previously attended for credit evaluation by the Office of Transfer Admission. The credit evaluation determines whether the course work qualifies for transfer credit at the University. Transfer of academic credit or recognition of degrees from other institutions to UPTA involves consideration of the following

  • transfer credit is awarded for academic coursework earned from regionally accredited institutions.
  • courses taken at other institutions that have no direct University equivalents, may be accepted as general credit.
  • credit by examination at another institution is treated as transfer credit only if the sending institution records credit on student’s transcript.
  • coursework from trade schools, job training, physical education, continuing, education is typically not accepted.
