Institutional Radiation and Biosafety Safety Committee (IRBC)
The Institutional Radiation and Biosafety Committee (IRBC) reviews, approves, and oversees all research, clinical and educational activities involving the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices, and infectious biological materials and recombinant DNA at the University of Texas Pan American . This process provides guidelines that ensure appropriate procedures; equipment, facilities, and training are adequate in conjunction with the risk.

Biosafety
Any use of microbiological/infectious agents and/or recombinant DNA molecules in research must be reviewed and approved or exempted by the Institutional Radiation and Biosafety Committee (IRBC) before the procedure is initiated. The CDC/NIH manual entitled Biosafety
in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 4th Edition contains safe practices and laboratory requirements for research using microbiological agents. The NIH Guidelines
for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules contains requirements for protocol review and safe practices for work involving rDNA. The procedures are outlined in the following document.
