Supplemental Travel Funds for Junior Faculty

The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Diversity is pleased to announce the 2015-16 Junior Faculty Travel Support Program for tenure-track Assistant Professors who have not yet been awarded tenure or promotion. Junior faculty members may apply for travel funds up to $500 to support the presentation of research/creative work at a major academic/professional conference. In response to feedback from junior faculty members, and in recognition of the particular challenges they face, this program is intended to supplement, not replace, Departmental/School travel funding, which will remain the primary source for funding faculty travel. Thus, cost sharing by Departments/Schools and/or Colleges is required unless the Chair/Director and/or Dean certifies that all Departmental/College travel funds have been exhausted.  The Supplemental Travel Funds will match a Department/College contribution up to $500. It is expected that 30-40 junior faculty travel awards will be made during the calendar year with three (3) submission deadlines/cycles.

  • Applicants may not receive more than one (1) award per funding cycle. Preference will be given to first-time applicants.
  • Awards will be made only to faculty who will be presenting or exhibiting their work at major regional, national, or international academic or professional conferences/forums.
  • Department Chairs/Directors will complete an online recommendation form, in which s/he will indicate the amount of funding pledged by the department to support the faculty member's travel. If the department has no funds available to support this request, it will be forwarded to the Dean.
  • Once the faculty member clicks on Submit, an email will be automatically generated to the department Chair/director. That email will contain a link directing the Chair/Director to complete his/her certification of the application. We encourage all applicants to inform their department Chairs/Directors in advance and to provide Chairs/Directors with information about the conference for which they are seeking funding.
