Supplemental Travel Funds for Junior Faculty

The Office of the Provost announces a new program to support travel for research and professional development for junior faculty members (tenure-track faculty members who have not been awarded tenure or promotion). Junior faculty members may apply for travel funds up to $500 to support a presentation at an academic or professional conference. In response to feedback from junior faculty members, and in recognition of the particular challenges they face, this program is intended to supplement, not replace, departmental travel funding, which will remain the primary source for funding faculty travel. Thus, cost sharing by departments and/or colleges is required unless the department Chair and/or Dean certifies that all departmental/college travel funds have been exhausted; the Supplemental Travel Funds will match a department/college contribution up to $500. It is expected that 30-40 junior faculty travel awards will be made during the calendar year with three (3) submission deadlines/cycles.

Guidelines

  • Maximum request: $500.00 towards travel-related costs, including registration.
  • Evidence of acceptance for presentation of a scholarly/research paper or artistic presentation must accompany the application.
  • Documentation of travel costs (e.g. estimates from travel agencies, federal per diems, registration receipts, cost estimates from travel websites) must also be included with the application.
  • Applications submitted by the priority deadline will be screened and applicants will be notified within two weeks of the deadline.
  • If the number of applications received by the priority deadline exceeds the available funding, priority will be given to applicants traveling within the priority travel period.
  • Any applicant who is denied funding in one cycle may reapply in the next cycle, assuming the travel will take place at least one month following the priority deadline.
  • Applicants may not receive more than one (1) award per funding cycle. Preference will be given to first-time applicants.
  • Awards will be made only to faculty who will be presenting or exhibiting their work at major regional, national, or international professional conferences/forums.
  • Department Chairs will complete an online recommendation form, in which s/he will indicate the amount of funding pledged by the department to support the faculty member's travel. If the department has no funds available to support this request, it will be forwarded to the Dean.
  • Once you click Submit, an email will be automatically generated to your department Chair. That email will contain a link directing your Chair to complete their certification of your application. We encourage all applicants to inform their department Chairs in advance and to provide Chairs with information about the conference for which you are seeking funding.
