Educational Centers

Education Technology Center: The integration of technology into teaching and learning.

Center of Excellence in STEM Education: Advancing the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through cooperation between UTPA and the local community.

Center for Mexican American Studies: Preparing students to critically investigate community knowledge and socio-political, economic, cultural, and artistic conditions of and contributions by Mexican Americans.

CHAPS – Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools: Promote STEM education in the public schools while encouraging the preservation of the local culture.

Research Centers

University Transportation Center for Railway Safety:  Develops knowledge, diverse human resources, and innovative technology in support of strategic safety plans for the U.S. rail transportation industry.

Center for Subtropical Studies: Focusing on the environmental concerns of the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Coastal Studies Laboratory:  Concentrates on University education, public education and coastal research.

Center for Bilingual Studies: Brings together faculty from colleges across the university to collaborate on research that explores bilingual families and the communities in which they live.

Business and Tourism Research Center: Designs, conducts and disseminates customized, primary RGV-based research relevant to businesses and communities within the Rio Grande Valley.

Center for Border Economic Studies: A public policy research unit dedicated to the study of problems and issues unique to the U.S. -  Mexico border economy and North Tamaulipas.

South Texas Border Health Disparities Center: Focuses on enhancing the institutional capacity of UTPA researchers to conduct health disparities research with a particular emphasis on the prevention of obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease among the largely Hispanic population along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Border Health Office: Collaborates with community-based organizations to promote health services and education, provide technical assistance to communities and institutions, and sponsor health education efforts including conferences and workshops.

Service Centers

Center for Survey Research: Conduct research on issues that are important to Hidalgo and Cameron county residents. Topics primarily cover political and social issues.

Speech and Hearing Center: Provides diagnostic and therapeutic speech and hearing services to infants, preschoolers, school-aged children and adults in English and Spanish.
