Ethical Issues in Multicultural Counseling

This workshop is offered in conjunction with the Biomedical Ethics Conference held at UT-Pan American from March 23-25, 2011. This 3-hr workshop is open to Certified Rehabilitation Counselors, Licensed Social Workers, as well as Licenced Professional Counselors to help them with Ethics Continuing Educaton Units (CEUs). There will be 3 Ethics CEUs approved by Commission on Rehabilitation Certification for Rehabilitation Counselors and 3 Ethics CEUs for LMSW, LCSW, and LBSW approved by ASWB (Association of Social Work Boards).

 The topics to be covered for this 3-hr seminar are as follows:

  • Definition of Key Concepts
  • Goals and Objectives of Ethics
  • Ethical Principles
  • Codes of Ethics
  • Review of Ethical Decision Making 
  • Case Examples

Instructors:

Dr. Jerry Fischer is the Chair of the Rehabilitation Counseling Department.  He earned a doctorate in Rehabilitation from Southern Illinois University in 1992, a Masters of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from Montana State University -Billing in 1990, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1979 from Montana Tech..  Dr. Fischer is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Registered LPC Supervisor. 

Dr. Héctor Luis Díaz currently serves as professor and chair of the department of social work at The University of Texas Pan American. He was a social work practitioner for more than a decade before he entered academia in 1992. Currently, he is a licensed social worker in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and has held clinical social work licenses in the states of Ohio and Massachusetts. He was formerly a Certified Addictions Counselor in the State of Illinois. Currently, he teaches courses in the areas of social welfare policy, research and diversity. Dr. Diaz has approximately 25 publications including two books and many articles and book chapters related to various aspects of social work practice. He has also presented at 16 professional conferences. He has taught values and ethics in his graduate and undergraduate social work courses and has addressed this topic in his conference presentations.
