About The Univerity of Texas-Pan American

The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) serves the higher education needs of a rapidly growing, international, multicultural population in the South Texas region. UTPA is the 10th largest university in the state and the fifth largest in The University of Texas System. UTPA offers 57 bachelor’s degree programs, 57 master’s, three doctoral, and two cooperative doctoral programs. UTPA has more than 18, 000 students coming from 28 different states, and over 40 countries around the world. 

About the English Language Institute

Established in 1982, the UTPA English Language Institute (ELI) prepares students to enter an academic program with academically oriented English and offers all students the opportunity to learn functional use of the English language. The institute has a state-of-the-art audio lab and dynamic instructors. Upon completion of the program, students will have acquired a level of English that will enhance their opportunities for advancement.

ELI offers five intensive (eight-week) English programs every year. Seven levels of English are available from Basic to High Advanced. Also, a four-week Special Summer Program is offered for students eight years or older.

ELI Mission

The mission of the English Language Institute is to provide English language instruction to students, professionals and other individuals whose first language is not English; to enhance ESL students' ability to participate successfully in an American cultural environment; and to academically prepare students whose goal is to pursue a degree at an American university.

Location

ELI is located in Edinburg, Texas, approximately 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border and 75 miles northwest of South Padre Island.
