How do I search for a book?
You may go to the Library homepage and click on the Books link under Find. This will take you directly to the Library Catalog where you can search using keywords, title, author, subject headings, ISBN or ISSN numbers, call numbers, government documents, or OCLC.

How do I find an article or search using the Library database?
The best way to search for something in the Library’s databases is to search through the UTPA Library U Search. Another way to find articles is to search using the Library's Articles and Databases. Click on the title of the database you want to search and enter your topic in the search box. If you need additional help, please contact the Reference Desk at (956) 665-2752 or text us at (956) 203-0LIB (956-203-0542). You can also chat, email using Ask a Librarian or come see us in person on the 2nd floor Reference Desk.

How do I request something through Interlibrary Loan?
Log into UTPA Interlibrary Loan and select the item you need to request on the left menu under New Request. It is important that you fill out the request completely. Once you submit your request it will take about two weeks to fill. For additional information please visit the Interlibrary Loan departmental webpage or contact the Interlibrary Loan office at (956) 665-2342 and srv_libloan@utpa.edu, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central Time.

Log into UTPA Interlibrary Loan. For additional information please visit the Interlibrary Loan department webpage or contact the Interlibrary Loan office at 956-665-2342, emails can be sent to srv_libloan@utpa.edu, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central Time.

How do I get an appointment with a librarian to help me with my research?

Where can I find the Library Policy Manual? (Links to most used policies)
The Library Policies are located on the University Library webpage under About Us. When you open the Library Policy Manual, you can either use the “Find” tab located at the top of the pdf or you can search using the Table of Contents.

Where can I print in color?
Students can print color slides and special projects approved by the GIS/Media Lab supervisor in the GIS/Media Lab located on the 4th floor of the Library. For more information visit the GIS/Media Lab webpage.

Where can I print a large poster? Do you charge?
Students, faculty, and staff can print one poster per semester at no charge up to 4 linear feet on the plotter printer in the GIS/Media lab located on the 4th floor of the Library. For more information visit the GIS/Media Lab webpage.

Can I make copies in the Library?
Copiers are available on the 1st floor of the Library.

BronCards may be used in copiers throughout campus as well as in microform readers on the 3rd floor of the Library. For guests without a valid UTPA ID/BronCard, guest Vending Cards are available for purchase for $1.00 on the 1st floor. Cash may be added to the Vending Cards in denominations from $5.00 - $20.00, and may be reused indefinitely.  Any problems with vending cards are handled by Auxiliary Services, (956) 665-7276.

Copies are $0.08 when using your UTPA BroncCard or guest Vending Card and $0.10 when using coins.

Does the Library have scanners?
Scanners are located on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the Library. Scans can be saved through a USB drive or the files can be emailed directly to the user.

How many printing credits do I get?
All students (PhD, graduate and undergraduate), faculty, and staff are given 300 print credits per semester.

Does the Library offer research help?
The Library provides links to research help and has a website called Research 101 where you can take a tutorial on the basics of researching. Help can also be requested using the Book a Librarian form located under Services.
Additional help can be found at the University Learning Assistance Center, or the University Writing Center.

I am a professor with the University. How do I schedule a Library Instructional Class?

Where are the Library books?
Special Collection books are located on the 1st floor west of the Circulation Desk. Bound Periodicals and Print Journals are located on the 2nd floor West side of the Library. The Oversized, Juvenile, and Reference Collections are located on the 2nd floor East side of the Library. Our General Collection is located on both the 3rd floor West side and the 4th floor of the Library.

How do I find out when my books are due?
Library loan periods for all borrowers are subject to change as affected by Library hours and ending of semester. Please verify your checkout receipt and/or log into My Library/Renew Books found under Services to view your due dates.

How many books can I check out at one time?
This depends on the patron type: students, faculty/staff, teaching assistants, retired faculty/staff, Emeritus Faculty, members of the President’s Circle, alumni, and visiting scholars can check out an unlimited number of books from the Library, as long as there are no outstanding fines or overdue books. Public patrons may borrow up to three books as long as there are no outstanding fines or overdue books. TexShare patrons may borrow up to five books as long as there are no outstanding fines or overdue books. For more information visit the Circulation webpage.

Can you place a book on hold for me?
The Circulation department will not hold Library books for patrons overnight. Books need to be checked out at the time of the request. The Circulation department will hold books for a maximum of two hours when a patron forgets to bring his/her personal bar coded ID card. No other department in the Library is authorized to hold circulating books for patrons. Any exception has to be approved by the Circulation supervisor or Dean of Library.
If a book is already checked out, a student can request the book by clicking on the "request" link found when searching for the book and logging into their account. Once the book is returned to the University Library, the person who submitted the request will be notified, and the book will be held until the student can pick it up.

What do I need to check out a book?
To checkout items from the Library, you will need your bar coded UTPA ID card. A bar code may be obtained at the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor. Your ID card must be presented each time you borrow or renew books. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this requirement.

How do I access the databases from off-campus?
To access the database from off-campus, you must login using your UTPA ID and username when prompted. If you are having problems accessing any of the databases, make sure your pop-up blockers are turned off. Some schools and businesses use firewalls to block access to outside databases, so they may not work in these locations. If you are still having problems accessing the databases, please contact the Reference Desk at (956) 665-2752, or you can send a message through the Ask a Librarian service.

How can I pay my Library fines or fees?
Library fines and fees can be paid at the Library Circulation Desk. Credit cards are accepted in person as well as over the phone when you call the Circulation Desk at (956) 665-2005.

How can I get help with citations?
Citation style manuals are available for checkout and are also available at the 2nd floor Reference Desk for use in the Library. You can also visit the University Writing Center webpage.
