Long Term Program

The long-term (individual) programs are opportunities for students to study abroad for one semester or a full academic year. An OIP advisor helps the student choose a program in a foreign institution that is best suited and beneficial for the student's academic needs.

Options: Duration of long-term program

  • 1 semester
  • 1 semester + Summer I
  • 1 semester + Summer I + Summer II

Process

Outgoing Student Process

Individual, Exchange & Visiting Scholars

All applications must be submitted to the Office of International Programs (OIP) for review. OIP will work with the Office of International Admissions & Services (OIAS) to complete the application process. Students will be notified when the application process is complete.

Step 1: Meet with Advisor

  • Schedule an appointment with OIP to review application packet and select location of Study Abroad.

Step 2: Complete Application

  • Submit complete application with required documents to OIP advisor.
     
  • Complete Application Form
     
  • Write a letter of intent (explaining your purpose and goals for the program you wish to enroll, limit 300 words.)
     
  • Get a letter of recommendation from a UTPA faculty member.
     
  • Official transcript from the Registrars Office in a sealed envelope.
    (Undergraduate: minimum 30 credits hours and 2.0 GPA / Graduate: 3.0 GPA)
     
  • Get copy of the Transfer Evaluation Form for Foreign Institutions from the Registrar's Office.
     
  • 2 passport pictures (2 x 2in)
     
  • Copy of passport.
  • Copy of visa (if applicable) 
  • Copy of the Foreign Student Application Form.
  • Copy of the Foreign Program Acceptance Letter.
  • UTPA Long Term Study Abroad Student Cost Sheet.
  • Pay NON-REFUNDABLE $125 deposit for study abroad program.
  • Student International Medical Insurance Card is issued.

Step 3: Orientation

  • International S.O.S. Registration
  • Attend orientation and pre-departure meeting.
