Biography
As member of the department he has served in various capacities such as BSW Program Director, Director of Field Education, and Coordinator of Continuing Education. His teaching career extends over 25 years. Prior to teaching at UTPA he taught at West Texas State University in the panhandle region of Texas. In addition, Mr. Solis has taught practically most of the undergraduate courses within a generalist social work perspective. He received two undergraduate degrees, a B.A. degree in Sociology and a Fine Arts degree in Art, both from Trinity University in San Antonio in 1972. He is a native of San Antonio where he received a Master of Social Work degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in 1974.
Professional Specialties
Professor Solis is licensed as an LMSW-AP and enjoys studying diversity of cultures. On many occasions he has initiated and organized international exchange activities with faculty and students in Mexico and Germany. Mr. Solis is very much interested in researching cultural variables as it effects institutions and human behavior. Moreover, Mr. Solis is an artist and has enjoyed participating in art exhibits and book illustrations, an activity he would like to expand and become more involved with.
Teaching
As a faculty member he enjoys teaching undergraduate students in such content areas as human behavior, policy, field instruction, and practice courses. Mr. Solis uses the adult cooperative learning model when ever he can, especially with upper division undergraduate courses. Mr. Solis does not have an extensive publication record but has presented professionally at numerous local, state, regional, and international conferences. Several of his presentations have been published as refereed conference proceedings including his latest presentation titled: “La Política de los Estados Unidos con México: Puerta Abierta, Puerta Cerrada” given in Spanish at a professional conference in Mexico.
