Biography

A native of theRio Grande Valley, Dr. Arizmendi earned an MSW from the University of Michigan in 1973 and a J.D. (Doctorate in Jurisprudence) from the University of California at Davis in 1978. Combining her social work and legal training, she practiced law in Texas and California for eighteen years as a legal services attorney, providing legal services to farm workers and residents of colonias Her experience includes social welfare program development, policy practice and community practice. Before joining the UTPA faculty in January 2000, she taught social work and Chaired the Department of Health and Human Services at Texas College She continues to offer her services to colonia residents in Hidalgo and Starr counties through her work with various nonprofit organizations.
