Process for Admission and Nofication
To apply for admission to the BSW Program, students must
- Successfully complete a minimum of 30 hours of the University Core Curriculum, including freshmen English (6 credit hours) and MATH 1340 or higher with a grade of "C" or higher.
- Complete SOCW 1313 with a grade of "C" or higher.
- Have achieved a 2.4 cumulative grade point average at the time of application
- Submit an "Application for Admission into BSW Degree Program."
- Submit an unofficial UTPA transcript or degree audit showing no incomplete grades (attach to application).
- Submit a 300-500 word essay describing the applicant's interest in becoming a professional social worker (attach to application).
Completed applications are submitted to the Director of the BSW Program. The BSW Program Director and one other member of the BSW Program Committee review each application (1) to verify that the applicant meets the academic eligibility requirements for admission to the Program and (2) to assess the applicant's suitability for the social work profession based on the 300-500 word essay submitted with the application. After the committee recommends approval, the BSW Program Director notifies the student in writing that she/he has been admitted into the BSW Program. Additionally, the director prepares a degree plan for the student and assigns an academic advisor.
Student Responsibilities
Implicit in process of being admitted into the program is the expectation the student’s behavior will be guided by National Association of Social Worker’s Code of Ethics. The code of ethics addresses six areas, as outlined below
- The Social Worker’s Conduct and Comportment as a Social Worker.
- The Social Worker’s Ethical Responsibility to Clients.
- The Social Worker’s Ethical Responsibility to Colleagues.
- The Social Worker’s Ethical Responsibility to Employers and Employing Organizations.
- The Social Worker’s Ethical Responsibility to the Social Work Profession.
- The Social Worker’s Ethical Responsibility to Society.
