The demand for pharmacists has exploded in recent years due to the rapidly expanding geriatric population and the ever-increasing availability of new medications, which has prompted expansion of the health care and pharmaceutical industries. The responsibilities of pharmacists as health care providers is expanding to meet societal needs, as pharmacists become more actively involved in medication management for patients of all ages.
During the past decade, pharmacists have been consistently rated one of the most highly respected and trusted professionals by the Gallop Poll. Pharmacists are committed to serving the medication needs of the public and other health care providers. Pharmacists use their medication expertise to: recommend treatment options and monitor patient care outcomes, provide medication education to patients and caregivers, ensure medication safety, and provide drug information to physicians, nurses and other health care professionals.
In light of the present demand, post-graduation placement rates are high, with many pharmacy graduates receiving at least one offer of employment. Pharmacist work in a variety of practice settings including but not limited to: community pharmacies, hospitals and other healthcare institutions, managed care pharmacies, academic and research institutions, nuclear pharmacies, pharmaceutical and biotechnical industries, government agencies, and professional organizations.
Pharmacy graduates may also choose to pursue post-graduate training (residency, fellowship, or graduate education), which affords enhanced career opportunities and greater mobility within the profession.
