As a high school applicant, do I need to apply to UTPA?

Yes, all students applying to the CPP must apply and be accepted to UTPA. This step must occur either before or at the same time you are applying to the CPP. The CPP is a program within UTPA; therefore acceptance to UTPA is required.

Where can I find information about UTPA financial aid, scholarships, course registration, and housing?

All UTPA students are responsible for pursuing each of these as necessary. Information is available through the UTPA web site by selecting either the Future Student or Current Student tabs. The CPP staff is unable to assist with these areas beyond referring applicants to the UTPA web site.

Will Advanced Placement (AP) Credit be accepted?

The University of Texas - Pan American (UTPA) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) accept AP test scores. Students should consider obtaining official AP credit while attending UTPA  since  the requirements for UT Austin may be more stringent. Please contact the admissions office of the respective institution for additional information.

Will dual enrollment credit for coursework earned during high school be accepted or will I have to repeat these courses?

Both UTPA and UT Austin accept dual enrollment credit for coursework earned during high school. Student transcripts are reviewed in order to determine allowable equivalent course credit. Please contact the admissions office of the respective institution for additional information.

Can dual enrollment credit be used to satisfy the pharmacy pre-requisites?

Yes, accepted dual enrollment course credit may be used to satisfy pharmacy pre-requisites. However, all students enrolled in the high school pathway are required to complete two years at UTPA, and suffice semester credit hour workload requirements. Under these circumstances additional coursework will be recommended. For additional information please select the Pre-Pharmacy Course Requirements tab (to the left).

Which dual enrollment credit can and cannot be used to satisfy pharmacy pre-requisites?

There are no restrictions as long as the course credit is accepted by the academic institution. For example, most institutions will not accept dual enrollment credit for earned letter grades of D or less.

What is the PCAT and why is it required for admissions?

The PCAT is a standardized examination used by Colleges and Schools of Pharmacy to assess the scholastic aptitude of applicants. The PCAT is required for admission by all Texas Colleges and Schools of Pharmacy. Click here for more information about the PCAT including test dates.

All students admitted to the CPP, whether high school or transitional, are required to take the PCAT. The UT Austin COP maintains a database containing information on all admitted students. Basic, general information (gender, race, etc.) pertaining to PCAT scores is shared with accreditation bodies and professional organizations as a means of comparison between institutions. Student confidentiality is maintained.

What is the minimum acceptable PCAT score that must be attained?

All students must strive to attain the highest PCAT scores possible. Current CPP PCAT requirements are as follows: >75% composite,>50% in each sub-score, and >3.0 writing score. Please visit the UT Austin COP Admissions web site for additional information.

How do the application requirements for transitional applicants differ from those required of general applicants to the UT Austin COP?

The only differences are as follows:

  • Additional application to the CPP;
  • Applicants agree to return to UTPA and the Rio Grande Valley for third and fourth years of the pharmacy curriculum (i.e. early region selection).

What happens if there are more transitional students than openings?

The admissions process to all PharmD programs across the country is competitive and not all students may be granted admission. All applicants who apply through the transitional route will be reviewed in comparison with the entire general applicant pool and will be afforded full consideration. Applying through the CPP merely provides notification of region preference.

Can I apply through the transitional pathway if I did not complete my coursework at UTPA?

No, the transitional pathway is currently available only to those who have completed the majority of the pharmacy pre-requisites at UTPA. All other students should apply directly to the UT Austin COP.

Is there extra help or tutoring I can get for help with the PCAT exam?

Yes, UTPA does offer a PCAT Prep Course that will help students that would like additional help on preparing for the course. Please follow the link for more information on the PCAT Prep Course. https://portal.utpa.edu/utpa_main/daa_home/ogs_home/ce_home/ce_test/test_swler
