Special Programs and Facilities
The faculty of the College provide academic advisement and assistance to students pursuing careers in health and/or the social and human services. Curricula for programs within the College are structured to provide theory as well as the practice/experience component of the College’s programs. The University has negotiated affiliation agreements with 400 health/human service/social service facilities in South Texas and in other regions.
Speech and Hearing Center
The University’s Speech and Hearing Center conducts speech-language and hearing evaluations to determine whether communication disorders exist and whether intervention is needed. Some of the communication disorders that can be identified through an evaluation include hearing loss, delayed language development, delayed speech development, voice disorder, fluency disorder, aphasia, apraxia of speech and dysarthria. If speech-language intervention or aural rehabilitation is needed, programs that address these communication concerns are available in English and Spanish.
Advisement Center
The College of Health Sciences and Human Services (COHSHS) and the Academic Advisement and Mentoring Center have collaborated to form the COHSHS Advisement Center. The goal of the COHSHS Advisement Center is to be a viable resource for students by providing academic advisement and career guidance. The COHSHS Advisement Center promotes a strong academic foundation, clarifies admissions application requirements for specific programs, provides referrals to other university support services and facilitates a smooth transition of undergraduate students into their desired academic programs. Furthermore, the HSH Advisement Center strives to assist faculty in their role as advisors and mentors by teaching students to be better prepared for their advisement sessions with faculty, by more effectively connecting students to their appropriate faculty advisor and by providing faculty with advisement resources.
The staff of the COHSHS Advisement Center looks forward to assisting students toward successful completion of their academic goals. Student Organization Offices
The College’s student organization office, located in HSHW 1.102, had its grand opening on August 23, 2006. The College understands that having dedicated space greatly aids the clubs in effectively organizing as well as giving the club officers a chance to interact with other clubs. Each club has an assigned work station with a desk and computer which is networked to a shared printer.
