Graduating Under GHP

In order to fulfill its requirements and graduate from the Guerra Honors Program, students are encouraged to take as many Honors courses as their schedules allow each semester. A GHP graduate must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and must have successfully completed one of the following tracks:

Track 1: “HONORS” (21 Hours Minimum)

  •  HONR 2387 Humanities I (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 2388 Humanities II (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 3380 Honors Practicum (3 Hours)
  •  Three Upper-Division Honors or Honors-by-Contract Courses (9 Hours)
  •  One Honors Elective—Upper or Lower Division (3 Hours)

Track 2: “HONORS WITH DISTINCTION” (25 Hours Minimum)

  •  HONR 2387 Humanities I (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 2388 Humanities II (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 3380 Honors Practicum (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 3187 Honors Seminar - Problems in Independent Study (1 Hour)
  •  HONR 3387 Honors Seminar - Independent Studies (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 4387 Honors Seminar - Independent Studies (3 Hours)
  •  Three Upper-Division Honors or Honors-by-Contract Courses (9 Hours)

Track 3: “HONORS WIH HIGHEST DISTINCTION”* (28 Hours Minimum)

  •  HONR 2387 Humanities I (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 2388 Humanities II (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 3380 Honors Practicum (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 3187 Honors Seminar - Problems in Independent Study (1 Hour)
  •  HONR 3387 Honors Seminar - Independent Studies (3 Hours)
  •  HONR 4387 Honors Seminar - Independent Studies (3 Hours)
  •  Three Upper-Division Honors or Honors-by-Contract Courses (9 Hours)
  •  One Honors Elective—Upper or Lower Division (3 Hours)           

 NOTE: For Track 2 and Track 3, the senior honors thesis, capstone practicum, and/or other creative component will be defended before a minimum of three UTPA faculty members selected to serve as the student's committee. The student arranges his or her committee in consultation with the Director of the Guerra Honors Program.

* “Honors with Highest Distinction” will be determined and awarded by the Guerra Honors Program Director and based on GPA, the quality of the Honors Thesis, and the Honors Portfolio. Additionally, the Honors Director will determine the degree and the quality of the student’s service participation.
