Admissions

The Guerra Honors Program recognizes that each student’s academic and life experiences are unique consequently, no one set of admissions criteria exists to evaluate all applicants. Different categories of admissions criteria below explain how the Guerra Honors Program Director makes acceptance decisions. Students may join the Guerra Honors Program either before or after enrollment at UTPA. While we strongly encourage students to join as early as possible in their academic careers, students of any classification may become members of the program.

High School Students and Entering Freshmen

Students new to UTPA demonstrate potential for success in the Guerra Honors Program in numerous ways. Those who meet one or more of the following criteria are guaranteed admission to the program:

SAT Critical Reading and Mathematics Sections = 1110 or Higher

SAT Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing Sections = 1670 or Higher

High School Graduation in Top 10%

Application for High School Students

UTPA Students

Students commonly decide to join the Guerra Honors Program a bit later in their college careers, and most find tremendous success in doing so. Admission to the program for students who have already entered UTPA is based on a different criteria. Students who have completed 12 or more credit hours at UTPA and have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher are guaranteed admission to the program.

Transfer Students

Students who transfer to UTPA regularly seek admission to the Guerra Honors Program. Transfer students who have completed 12 or more credit hours at their previous institution and have earned a 3.5 GPA or higher are also guaranteed admission to the program. Upon acceptance, the Guerra Honors Program Director will work with both the student and UTPA’s Registrar’s Office to determine if prior academic work may substitute for credit in the program.

Interested Students Who Do Not Currently Meet Criteria for Admission

A student’s inability to meet criteria in one of the above categories does not automatically disqualify him or her from becoming a member of the Guerra Honors Programs. Students whose credentials approximate the relevant criteria listed above may still apply. However, along with other application materials, they should also submit a letter to the program director stating how and why they will still find success in the program. That is, students should provide detailed evidence of past successes that demonstrate potential for success and achievement in the Guerra Honors Program as well as a clear and detailed statement of future plans. Please recognize that the director reads these letters for content as well as to gauge student's writing.
