Minor in Sociology

The Sociology minor requires the completion of 18 semester hours in Sociology. Nine semester hours must be advanced. Sociology majors cannot minor in Sociology.

Major in Sociology

For a Major in Sociology, a student must complete:

43 hours (University Core Requirements, excluding any Sociology Classes)
3 hours University language proficiency requirement.
3 hours additional Social Science( not including Sociology or the Social Science taken for the UTPA core )
33 hours (Sociology Requirement)
18 hours (Requirements for the Minor in General)
51 hours (Advanced Hours)
120 hours (Minimum)

Sociology Majors

Minimum hours needed: 33
Minimum advanced hours needed in Sociology: 21
Maximum lower-division hours needed in Sociology: 12

SOCI 2301 Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences
SOCI 3301 Quantitative Method
SOCI 4333 Classical Social Theory
Select six hours from the following:
SOCI 3302 Qualitative Method
SOCI 4334 Contemporary Social Theory
SOCI 4352 Social Inequality

Sociology Electives: 15 hours with 9 advanced
6 hours of Basic Electives (1000-4999)
9 hours of Advance Electives (3000-4999)

Students who have completed the bachelor’s degree in sociology are expected to
Goal 1: Demonstrate knowledge of basic sociological concepts and sociological perspectives.
Goal 2: Understand basic procedures of sociological research and be able to analyze sociological data.
Goal 3: Apply sociological perspectives and methodology to community service and research projects.
