Students who are interested in an internship can enroll in ANTH 3345, Anthropology Community Internship. Students gain practical experience working in a community organization, government agency or business enterprise related to their career goals. Students work closely with agency staff and perform a variety of tasks essential to the mission and goals of the organization. Interns are considered professional staff and participate in staff meetings, conduct research, analyze data or other tasks deemed useful by the organization. By working closely with other professionals at the site, students learn firsthand how anthropological concepts and skills can be used to understand social problems in their community. Students should be aware that most local internships are not paid.
Students interested in supervised “hands on” experience can also enroll in ANTH 3343 (Museum Studies) or ANTH 3344 (Archive Studies). These courses place students in local museums and archives alongside museum professionals where students receive instruction and experience related to key features of museum and archive management, such as policies and procedures; artifact and document cataloging, care, and conservation; exhibit preparation; and education programs and publicity.
