About Us

Our Mission

The Center for Survey Research at the University of Texas – Pan American delivers information and expertise to decision makers, scholars, community leaders and citizens as they seek to forge solutions to urban problems and deal with issues of public policy. The overall goal of the Center is to provide decision-makers and scholars with the best possible information to forge solutions to the problems they confront. Toward that goal, the Center can provide research and technical assistance to governmental and nonprofit organizations in Texas. Additionally, the Center helps fulfill the University’s instructional mission by involving students in survey research and data analysis. Finally, the Center also engages in research and analyses for individuals, agencies, and companies.

Our History

The Center for Survey Research at the University of Texas – Pan American was created by a former Dean, James Lamar, in 1998, with help from Dr. Jerry Polinard and Dr. Robert Wrinkle. Since its inception, the Center has completed a number of studies that have been used in scholarly research journals such as Political Research Quarterly, Social Science Quarterly, and the State and Local Government Review.

Our Directors

Dr. Robert Wrinkle is the Director of The Center for Survey Research and Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas – Pan American. He conducted research on community attitudes, political behavior, and public policy in the United States. He has published over 40 scholarly articles and book chapters. Dr. Wrinkle is a nationally recognized expert on Latino politics in the U.S. and immigration policy.

Dr. Jessica Lavariega Monforti is the Senior Faculty Research Associate at the Center for Survey Research and an Assistant Professor of Political Science at UTPA. She conducted research on issues of public policy such as immigration and urban politics, as well as politics of race, gender, and ethnicity. She has published research in PS: Political Science, the Latino/a Research Review, and the Journal of Women, Politics, and Policy. She has also published chapters, as well as in the Urban Affairs Review, and Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism. Dr. Lavariega Monforti is a co-editor of Black and Latino/a Politics: Issues in Political Development in the United States with Dr. William E. Nelson, Jr. She was also a Ford Post-Doctoral Fellow in 2005-2006, during which time she was placed at The Metropolitan Center at Florida International University and engaged in fieldwork for a project on political incorporation of immigrants in urban political environments.
