The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, is one of the six Colleges of the University of Texas-Pan American. It is composed of six departments and one collaboration: Political Science, Sociology, Psychology & Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Military Science, the Public Administration Program, and Global Security Studies and Leadership through IGkNU. The faculty in these areas are outstanding professors and scholars.

Criminal Justice
The Department of Criminal Justice prepares the student to enter such careers as law enforcement, probation, parole, institutional corrections, youth services and police management at all levels of government. The well-rounded academic experience provided by the Department of Criminal Justice serves as a strong foundation for those students interested in graduate study in the social sciences. The Department of Criminal Justice is one of the largest in Texas and enjoys an excellent reputation. Graduates have been successfully placed in agencies at all levels of government, in addition to pursuing graduate work.

Military Science
The Department of Military Science provides The Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC), a training that can lead to commissioning in the United States Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard.

Political Science
Political science is the study of government, public policies and political behavior. This discipline uses both humanistic and scientific perspectives and skills to examine all countries and regions of the world. Political science students enjoy a range of exciting careers in federal, state and local governments, law, business, international organizations, nonprofit associations and organizations, campaign management and polling, journalism, pre-collegiate education, electoral politics, research, and university and college teaching. The Political Science Department also includes a Pre-Law program to prepare students to pursue a law degree.

Psychology & Anthropology
The psychology program at UTPA offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as an undergraduate minor. Psychology is both an applied and academic field that studies behavior and mental processes, such as thoughts and feelings. Psychology studies a diversity of topics such as psychological disorders and psychotherapy, learning, early childhood development, stress, the interaction between the mind and the body, animal behavior, the influence of other people on our own behavior, personality, sleep and dreaming, and brain injury. Psychologists strive to understand people better and to use their understanding to improve the human condition. A demand exists for baccalaureate psychology graduates in public and private agencies dealing with human relations. However, the more challenging and specialized fields of psychology usually require further study beyond the bachelor’s degree. All faculty in the psychology program are active researchers and/or clinicians.

Public Administration
The Master's of Public Administration (M.P.A.) graduate degree may be obtained by earning 39 semester credit hours. The MPA is a professional preparation degree which provides the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary for leadership and and management in public service at all levels of government and non-profit organizations.

Sociology
Students majoring and minoring in Sociology receive excellent preparation for careers in public and private agencies dealing in human relations. The more challenging and specialized fields in sociology usually require further study beyond the Bachelor's degree. Sociology also provides excellent background for those persons considering careers in such fields as education, health, law, law enforcement, business and journalism.

Global Security Studies and Leadership / IGkNu
The Global Security Studies degree prepares students for careers in intelligence, national security and other sectors of the global economy through advanced interdisciplinary studies. This program offers an undergraduate minor, a master’s degree, and graduate certificate that will broaden the skill sets of students through focus on advanced research, effective cross-discipline team communication, and critical analysis. Given that jobs in government or private industry often require multidisciplinary cooperation, GSS will prepare students to work with people from different backgrounds, abilities, and knowledge bases.
