Message from the Dean

The College strives to provide its students and faculty an environment of academic freedom that will insure the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of knowledge. The College will provide a strong scientific and technical foundation for all students of the university. The College will continue to pursue a strong research program involving undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in all areas of science and mathematics, and a strong teacher preparation program in science, mathematics, and technology.

 Working together to tackle the issues threatening the environment of the South Texas border region was the focus of the first Conference in Subtropical Biology held recently at The University of Texas-Pan American.

UTPA students to undergo giant reed study with USDA scientists

WESLACO—Six University of Texas-Pan American students are beginning research on the giant reed this week, thanks to a $245,000 grant, even as the center facilitating the program prepares for possible closure.

Integrating South Texas Efforts In STEM Education

The University of Texas-Pan American recently received a $3.7 million award for four years with a possible $1 million for the fifth year from the Department of Defense (DoD) HBCU/MI program to establish a Center of Excellence in STEM. UTPA was one of three institutions across the nation to receive the award.   As the lead institution of the award,  the University of Texas-Pan American, along with its South Texas collaborators:  South Texas College, Texas A&M International University-Laredo,  and the University of Texas-Brownsville will provide activities to strengthen STEM academic programs and to increase the number of STEM graduates particularly those from underrepresented groups.
