Undergraduate Research Training Program

The HHMI Undergraduate Science Education Program at UTPA invites applications for participation in a comprehensive undergraduate research experience in biosciences. Each academic year ten student will be selected. The student will choose a mentor from the Biology or Chemistry Department. The program offers a stipend of $3,000 per academic year and $3,200 for summer research. In addition, funds for research supplies and travel will be provided. Appointments will start in the Fall semester.

Students pursing a career in Biological and Chemical sciences and planning to go to graduate school will be given priority in the selection process.

Requirements:

  • Must be a full-time student in good academic standing
  • Must commit to work in the program at least for one academic year (15 hrs/wk) and one summer session (35 hrs/wk); support for entire calendar year is also available
  • Must register for the GRE prep course (at no cost) and take the GRE exam before May 2009
  • Must attend all HHMI seminar series and mini-symposia
  • Must enroll in and complete the Ethics and Methods of Biological Research course in spring 2009
  • Must participate in all academic and social cohort activities

  • A letter of interest describing prior research experience or interest in research, and career plans (350 words limit)
  • Academic Transcripts
  • Two letters of recommendation (describing candidate’s academic performance, interest in research, prospects of research accomplishment at UTPA, leadership qualities, communication skills, and expected impact of HHMI research experience on candidate’s professional career)
