Research Summary:

Narayan Bhat received his B. S. in Chemistry from Karnatak University, India 1976 and his Ph.D. in organic Chemistry from D Pune University, India in 1982. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Purdue University from 1982-1990. From 1990-1992 he worked for the Ethyl Corporation as Senior R&D Chemist. He returned to India in 1992 as Assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Sciences at Bangalore. He joined University of Nebraska in 1994 as Research Associate. In 1996 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of Texas Pan American. He became Associate Professor in 2001.

He is recipient of Outstanding Faculty Award at the University of Texas Pan American Professional Achievement. He served as the panel member for the on the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-Hispanic Serving Institutions-teaching proposals. He is also serving as panel member since 2001 for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) -1890 Capacity Grant Proposals.

Current research interest includes, developing novel methodologies leading to stereodefined alkenes based on organometallic reagents. The primary objective is to explore novel methods to synthesize new organic compounds involving undergraduate students. We will continue to explore the use of organometallic compounds in organic synthesis. He also uses organoborane reagents to carry out novel synthetic transformations. The novel carbon-carbon bond forming reactions from the organometallic reagents involving undergraduate research students will be his main future research program. His research is supported by grants from NIH and Robert A. Welch Foundation.
