Biography:
Dr. Bimal K. Banik is the President’s Endowed Professor and a Professor at UTPA. He is also a Professor at UT Health Science Center (San Antonio) and an Adjunct Professor at UT San Antonio. Based on his outstanding research accomplishments, teaching, mentoring and recognition the Royal Society of Chemistry, Oxford, England has designated him as a “Fellow” with a salutation “FRSC”. He was a faculty member at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston for nine years. He conducted postdoctoral research at Case Western Reserve University, Ohio and Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey. Dr. Banik was the top-ranked student in his undergraduate and graduate education and awarded gold medal by the Governor of West Bengal, India.
Professor Banik is the author of 431 patents, presentations and publications that explore organic, medicinal and biomedical science of anticancer agents, antibiotics, hormones and natural products. He and his students at UTPA have been researching on seven major challenging areas: Anticancer Beta Lactams, Antibiotics, Anticancer and Anti-infectious Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds, Environmentally Benign Processes, Microwave-Induced Chemical and Biological Reactions, Green Chemistry and Steroids. His research has been extensively funded through multimillion dollar grants (4.40 million dollars) by National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Private Foundations, UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and UTPA. He has chaired 14 scientific sessions at various US National Meetings and 100th year anniversary of Nobel Prize Celebration Meeting in Germany and introduced more than 300 eminent scientists around the Globe. He was the Chair of the Faculty Research Council of UTPA for the past three years. At present, he is the Program Director of the NIH and NCI Grant at UTPA and a Member of 5 US and International Scientific Societies. His research has been highlighted in Science News, 120 media exposures and 2900 citations in journals. He serves as an Editorial Board member for 6 international journals and is a reviewer of 37 journals including the American Chemical Society, Royal Society, Elsevier, Wiley, Thieme and many others. He is also a reviewer for NIH, NSF and international grant applications. Notably, he has reviewed approximately 370 journal manuscripts, 11 Ph. D. dissertations and approximately 350 grant applications. He actively collaborates with faculties at UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, University of Texas San Antonio, University of Paris, Wayne State University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Kent State University, Memorial University, University of Spain and Calcutta University.
Professor Banik has received the prestigious University of Texas Board of Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award in 2009. Clearly, this award confirms his recognition and signal honor of commitment to teaching through the delivery of the highest quality instruction. He isrecognized as one of the top mentors out of 300 for the last 18 years by the Director of the American Chemical Society SEED Program, New Jersey Division. His outstanding teaching skills at UTPA has gotten him 96.60% (excellent/good, approximately 85% excellent) evaluations in 25 courses. More than 600 UTPA students commented very highly on his outstanding teaching at the “Rate My Professor Website”, personal letters and confidential evaluation documents. He has developed many new courses and new facilities. His continuing excellence has led him to be a Finalist for the Minnie Stevens Piper Award for 3 years. He has been given the Outstanding Mentor Award by the New Jersey Board of Education, Citation by a New Jersey Senator, American Chemical Society SEED Program Director’s Certificate and numerous other Certificates by various US universities.
Professor Banik has supervised 380 research students that include 13 post doctoral fellows and numerous graduates and undergraduates. He is a highly recognized scientist, mentor and educator among his peers at the national and international level. Research opportunities provided by him at UTPA are only available to graduate/postgraduate students at other prestigious institutions. Many of his publications have become top-cited and most-cited among several thousands of publications in the World Science. His contributions can be reflected through a series of remarkable successes of his past and present students. Many of his students have completed Ph. D. and M. D. from different prestigious universities and medical schools in the US and have received university, state, national and international awards. A number of them have been accepted or completed their education at Harvard University, Yale University, MIT, Rice University, UT Southwestern Medical University, Baylor College of Medicine, Rutgers University, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, UT Austin, Texas A & M University, Stanford University and International Countries. Many of his students are employed at Merck Research Laboratories, Schering-Plough Research Institute, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Company and other Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industries.
Professor Banik was the Chair of the Faculty Research Council of UTPA for the past 3 years and also chaired UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Drug discovery symposium. He has received several prestigious invitations from Wiley, Springer, Houghton Mifflin, Current Medicinal chemistry, Current Organic Chemistry, Current Anti-inflammatory Agents, Tetrahedron, Arkivoc, Heterocycles, Indian Journal of chemistry, Linus, Frontiers in Bioscience, Elsevier, Francis & Taylor, Bentham, Molecules, American Chemical Society, Royal Society, Open Access Journal and many scientific societies in the world. He has been constantly receiving many invitations to write reviews, book chapters, books, papers, concepts, highlights and to speak at national and international conferences at a very random rate. He has delivered 37 invited research presentations in New York, New Jersey, Texas, Massachusetts, California, Ohio, Missouri, Florida Toronto, Merida and India.

Research Summary:
My laboratory efforts are directed toward synthesis of new organic compounds, synthetic method development, microwave-induced reactions and medicinal evaluation of organic compounds with a focus of understanding their interactions with living cells. Specifically, as Principal Investigator, I am working on the following projects at this time.
1. Chemistry, Biology and Pharmacology of Novel Anticancer Beta-Lactams
I have designed, synthesized and conducted a systematic analysis of chrysene and phenanthrene derivatives through an examination of their anticancer effects in vitro and in vivo. Structurally these antitumor agents are diamides in which a side chain is bound to the polycyclic system. During the course of this study, I envisioned that stereodefined beta-lactams would serve as conformationally constrained analogues of our open-chain diamides that have shown potent anticancer activity. In preliminary studies, I have synthesized and studied the stereochemical distribution of a number of novel beta-lactams. Some of them have shown promising antitumor activity in vitro against ovarian, breast, colon and leukemia cell lines and in animal tumor model systems. The cytotoxic potency of a few beta-lactams has been found to be greater than the well-known drug, cisplatin. My preliminary studies of these agents have demonstrated an extremely potent G2 blockade in the cell cycle. I am now preparing an extended series of beta-lactams, related to our lead compounds, in order to identify the structural and mechanistic correlates of anticancer activity. Several catalyst-based and chiral auxiliary-based approaches will be focused to prepare optically active beta-lactams and toinvestigate the biological properties in vitro and in vivo. My studies also include mechanism(s) of action of promising lead compounds, cell membrane interactions, DNA, RNA and protein synthesis, DNA binding and damage and effects on topoisomerase activity.
2. Organometallics in the Synthesis of Biologically Active Compounds
Metal-mediated organic transformation in the construction of natural products is an attractive area of research. I have been working on the use of organometallics for the preparation of medicinally active compounds. I have developed new metal-mediated (samarium, indium, bismuth, etc.) pathways that are synthetically challenging. For example, some of the methods are very effective for the synthesis of several medicinally active agents that include beta-glycosides, substituted beta-lactams, aromatic amines and heterocyclic compounds. My aim is to synthesize novel polycyclic aromatic systems using our samarium-induced reductive dimerization reaction. The synthesis of these multicyclic organic molecules constitutes an important advancement by which specific derivatives with anticancer activities can be prepared. In addition, I am interested in the construction of carbocyclic and heterocyclic ring systems (for example, some estrogen receptors) from acyclic precursors through radical mediated process and a route toward the synthesis of Taxol-related anticancer agents, glycosidase inhibitors and bicyclic beta-lactams.
The current focus in organic chemistry is to extend the principles of organic reactions that take place in homogeneous conditions to analogues reactions that take place on solid supported reagents. The high reactivity, convenience, cost-effective, diastereoselectivity and new chemistry associated with these metal-mediated reactions will represent a useful improvement over existing methods. Some of these methods also offer approaches that are more rapid, safer and ecologically friendly.
3. Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds as New Anticancer and Antibacterial Agents
Despite an enormous body of work that describes the cellular reaction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), the application of these derivatives as anticancer and antimicrobial agents has not been explored systematically. I have designed and synthesized a large number of planar molecules using highly lipophilic polycyclic aromatic amines as their nucleus for a systematic examination of modifications of structures that might result in selective interactions with cancer cells and bacteria in animal model. This study has established a few lead compounds that are very effective against a variety cancer cell lines and infectious microorganisms. The mechanism of action of these lead agents along with the identification of regimen is being developed at this time. From this detailed structure-activity and in vitro and in vivo studies, a few lead compounds that are highly potent in HT-29 (human colon) and SKOV-3 (human ovarian) cell lines have been developed. They have shown to produce apoptosis in HL-60 cell lines and inhibit protein synthesis, but not DNA and RNA. They are also excellent topoisomerase inhibitor. Although the major focus of therapeutic studies in cancer chemotherapy has been alterations of DNA replicative and repair functions, our studies have suggested that interactions with cell membranes may also play an important role in anticancer effectiveness.
4. Medicinal Chemistry by Microwave-Induced Reactions
The use of domestic microwave in organic synthesis, inorganic chemistry and medicinal chemistry is well established. This is particularly very interesting because of the unconventional set up for conducting the reaction to take advantages of the specific nature of microwave energy. As a part of my endeavor to synthesize medicinally active compounds, I have demonstrated the application of microwave irradiation in our work. For example, this method has been extensively used for the preparation of our anticancer beta-lactams and products derived from them. At present, I am pursuing the synthesis of organic compounds using domestic microwave oven in the presence of solid support. It has been demonstrated by our group that the stereochemistry of many organic compounds can be altered with the proper selection of the microwave energy. I am particularly interested in the Lewis acid-mediated reactions of indoles, pyrroles and carbamates since these skeletons are frequently used as medicinally important targets.
