FALL 2013

We are excited to welcome three new faculty members this fall. Dr. William Donner received his doctorate from the University of Delaware in 2007 and comes to us from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he worked as an assistant professor. He research focuses on understanding how interactions between environment and society shape exposure to hazards. Dr. Donner will be working to establish a master's program in disaster studies. Dr. Salvatore Restifo recently completed the PhD program at Ohio State University. His research focuses on racial/ethnic stratification, immigrant incorporation, and social movements. Dr. Steven Foy is another newly minted PhD. He joins us from Duke University and his academic interests include medical sociology, social psychology, and race and ethnicity.

We sadly announce the retirement of associate professor Dr. Uzzer Raajpoot after his many years of faithful and energetic service. Dr. Raajpoot first arrived at UTPA in 1991, after receiving his doctorate at the University of Oregon in Eugene. He took pride in being an excellent teacher, spending many hours talking with students in his office and boasted about his achievement in "converting' many students to becoming sociology majors. For Uzzer, teaching the students meant everything and making sure they were provided with learning opportunities was important so that more than once he taught summer classes without compensation. He served the department in many administrative capacities, from being undergraduate advisor, to interim chair, to finally graduate advisor.

We are pleased to announce the re-activation of UTPA's chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society. Students who meet the eligibility requirements will be contacted and invited to join. We expect to induct our first cohort of students sometime this fall. Stay tuned for details!
