Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at UTPA. On this website you will find information about potential careers for sociology and anthropology majors, posts about events and department news, and of course descriptions of our courses and majors. I am pleased to chair this dynamic department which not only provides first-rate training in sociology and anthropology but also serves as a hub for many of UTPA's most important initiatives such as integrating community engagement into the curriculum, creating programs such as CHAPS (the Community Historical Archeology Project with Schools), and curating the Border Studies Archive. Faculty in both the sociology and anthropology programs research and seek solutions to pressing social issues including diabetes prevention, reproductive health, border security, elder care, and disaster preparedness. In examining these social issues we explore social process that center on globalization, social movements, social inequality, race and ethnicity, gender, religion, identity, and culture.
Our faculty has published in the best journals and presses, won prestigious grants, and received numerous teaching, service, and research awards. We welcome you to join us in our exciting educational mission. Do no hesitate to contact me if you would like more information about our Department.
