Welcome to the Office of Field Experiences
The Office of Field Experiences assists the Teacher Certification Programs in the College of Education by facilitating field experiences in schools for students and coordinating placement and supervision for the Internship II/ Student Teaching Program. It is our mission to provide the best experiences possible for our pre-service teachers so they can become effective educators who possess the knowledge and understanding of all the complexities of the teaching profession.
An important component of your teacher preparation program is the connection between theory and practice. For this reason, all our programs are field based, requiring some experiences in real classrooms during every semester of coursework in the College of Education. Early field experiences take place during the semesters prior to student teaching where you have an opportunity to apply what you learn in the education courses, with real students. In this phase, you will be asked to complete carefully designed assignments to help you make meaning of the principles learned. Then in the final stage of preparation for the teaching profession, student teaching, you will complete your undergraduate studies by participating in an internship within one of our local public schools as a student teacher with the support and guidance of a mentor teacher and a university supervisor.
We are proud that the field experiences coordinated by our office meet the requirements of the Texas Education Agency and that through early field and student teaching experiences, our students are provided the space to connect what they learn to the learner centered proficiencies for Texas teachers, published by the State Board of Education (SBEC 1994).
With warm regards
Alcione N. Ostorga, Ph.D, Office of Field Experiences Director, Associate professor Curriculum and Instruction
