Graduate - On Campus - Admissions

The two basic ways to earn a Master’s of Science (M. S.) Degree in Kinesiology from The University of Texas-Pan American [UTPA] are: 1) traditionally, by attending classes on campus [F2F] and 2) through a Web-based system offered by The University of Texas System www.telecampus.UTsystem.edu. A third option is a combination of the two aforementioned routes. If the third option is employed, applicants must apply and be accepted into both programs. Check with Dr. Layne Jorgensen LJ85F0@UTPA.EDU for specifics with the on campus traditional program and Dr. Myers deblmyers@utpa.edu for the Web-based program. However, the following requirements must be met before for entrance into either program:

  1. Apply to, and secure acceptance to the university graduate program from The University of Texas-Pan American Office of Graduate Studies. Candidates should send all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts for evaluation from their respective institutions directly to the Office of Graduate Studies, Administration Building, Room 116, UTPA, 1201 W. University Drive, Edinburg, TX 78541. Candidates may contact the graduate office at 956/381-3661or 2207 or www.utpa.edu [scroll down Site Index to graduate school]. Application deadlines are set forth by the Office of Graduate Studies at UTPA.
In addition, the UTPA Kinesiology Department requires the following before acceptance into the on campus program.
  2. Candidates must submit a letter of application to the Graduate Program Coordinator, Department of Kinesiology, University of Texas-Pan American, Edinburg, Tx 78539.
  3. Candidates must provide copies of all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts (up to nine hours graduate work from another institution may be approved by the program coordinator for transfer) for evaluation (candidates may request the UTPA Office of Graduate Studies to send copies of transcripts to Graduate Program Coordinator).
    1. Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology or related discipline. Candidates may be required to take up to 18 hours of leveling work if their degree is not appropriate. Leveling work must be completed with a Grade Point Average of 3.00 or higher (based upon a 4.0 system) before acceptance into the program.
    2. The Health and Kinesiology Department uses the University Graduate Program GPA requirements for admission to its program.  Effective January 2008, an overall/cumulative GPA of 2.50-2.74 is required for probationary status and 2.75-4.0, for clear status.  This is based on a scale of 4.00.
  4. Candidates must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Aptitude Test and have the score sent directly from the testing agency to the Graduate Program Coordinator. Information regarding the GRE test is available through UTPA Testing Services at http://www.utpa.edu/dept/testing/ggre.cfm [on campus program only].
  5. Candidates must send three letters of recommendation directly to the Graduate Program Coordinator [on campus program only].
  6. For compliance, applicants with education from foreign institutions must have official transcripts evaluated for The University of Texas-Pan American Graduate Office through the Foreign Credentials Service of America http://www.fcsa.biz/ . Credential evaluation is done at the applicant’s expense.
  7. All entrance requirements should be completed at least thirty (30) days prior to beginning course work [on campus program only].
Application information and status is confidential. Applicants will be informed in writing of their status after the aforementioned requirements have been met.
