What is Computer Engineering?

Computer engineering is a discipline that embodies the science and technology of design, construction and implementation of software and hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment. The body of knowledge for computer engineering includes algorithms, computer architecture and organization, computer systems engineering, circuits and signals, database systems, digital logic, digital signal processing, electronics, embedded systems, computer networks, operating systems, programming, software engineering and discrete structures.

Dr. Pearl BrazierWelcome to the UTPA Computer Engineering Program web page. Computer Engineering is a combination of both computer hardware and computer software. The Computer Engineering Program at UTPA is jointly administered and delivered by the Department of Computer Science, who teach the courses related to Software and System development, and the Department of Electrical Engineering, who teach the courses related to Digital and Hardware development. The computer infrastructure that modern civilization depends upon is planned, designed, constructed and maintained by computer engineers. It includes everything that we depend upon to support the modern information age. UTPA implemented the BS in Computer Engineering (BSCE) degree on September 1, 2008, and has experienced steady growth since then. We had our first graduates in Spring of 2009. Within the curriculum, students select either a hardware or software track to further refine their interests. Students participate in internships and are placed in position locally, nationally, and internationally. There is a sustained demand for Computer Engineering graduates. Software Engineering was rated the #1 job in the United States in 2011 with high satisfaction ratings and predicted to lead the job market for the next twenty years. Computer Engineering has become broader and more diverse due to Internet and Cloud computing and Mobile Device development. Who We Are

The program awards a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCE). Computer engineering is a discipline that embodies the science and technology of design, construction and implementation of software and hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment. The body of knowledge for computer engineering includes algorithms, computer architecture and organization, computer systems engineering, circuits and signals, database systems, digital logic, digital signal processing, electronics, embedded systems, computer networks, operating systems, programming, software engineering and discrete structures. The curriculum was designed following the guidelines of ACM and IEEE model curricula to meet ABET standards. The program has been ABET accredited since the Spring of 2009.
