UTPA Facts
- UTPA is located in the Rio Grande Valley at the Tropical Tip of Texas. The main campus of the University is in Edinburg, Texas (pop. 34,000) some 20 minutes from the U.S./Mexico border and Reynosa, Mexico, a city of one million. The Valley area has a population of about one million and has been ranked among the top five fastest growing MSAs in the nation in the past decade.
- UTPA is located 75 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and the resort area of South Padre Island. South Texas is distinctly bicultural, and many people speak both English and Spanish.
- UTPA is the 10th largest university in the state and the fifth largest in the UT System with 17,335 students as of fall 2007.
- UTPA is 2nd in the nation in the number of bachelor’s degrees, 4th in the number of master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics, and 77th in the number of doctoral degrees awarded to Hispanics (Hispanic Outlook 2008).
- UTPA is among the top 100 best U.S. colleges for Hispanics, according to the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education.
