Ethnomusicology students may combine academic coursework in Ethnomusicology with firsthand musical experience in individual lessons and ensembles taught by leading performers in mariachi and Latin dance styles.
Interested students can join one of three mariachi ensembles: the award-winning UTPA Mariachi Juvenil, the all–female UTPA Mariachi Femenil, and the UTPA Mariachi Aztlán. They can also participate in the One O’Clock Latin Band, which performs salsa, cha-cha, mambo, merengue, bolero and many other Latin styles. Other active ensembles at UTPA and which might be of interest to graduate students in Ethnomusicology include African drumming and jazz.
To explore these and other ensemble options, go to the Music department’s ensemble webpage: http://www.utpa.edu/dept/music/ensembles.html.
