Spanish

Spanish is the world’s third most spoken language with over 500 million speakers. It is also the second most spoken language in the United States. The Department of Modern Languages offers a major and a minor in Spanish, an MA degree in Spanish, and a cooperative PhD in Spanish with the University of Houston.

French

French is spoken in five of the world’s six populated continents. There are over 270 million French speakers around the globe. French is an important language in North America as it is one of the official languages of Canada and an important second language in Latin America. The Department of Modern Languages offers a minor in French.

Portuguese

Portuguese is spoken in Brazil, Africa, and in Portugal. There are over 300 million speakers of Portuguese. Portuguese is a critical language in the Latin American region because of the importance of Brazil in the regional and hemispheric economy. The Department of Modern Languages offers beginning courses in Portuguese.

Mandarin Chinese

Mandarin Chinese is the world’s most widely spoken language with approximately 1.3 billion speakers. It is also the language of the world’s largest and fastest growing economy. The Department of Modern Languages offers beginning courses in Mandarin Chinese.
