Teacher Certification Degree Plans

There are several plans designed for students seeking teacher certification in English:

• Grades 8 - 12 Certified
• Grades 8 - 12 Certified with ESL endorsement
• Grades 8 - 12 with English as a second teaching field
• Grades 4 - 8 Certified

Students may consider the offerings below in order to develop an individual degree plan in consultation with an advisor from the English department. Click on "Course Descriptions" for more information about individual courses.

Teacher Certification in English (Grades 8 - 12 Certified)

Students wishing to be certified to teach English in Grades 8 through 12 need to meet the following course requirements in addition to the general education requirements for the 48 hour Core Curriculum:

Strongly recommended (to help you pass the media literacy portion of the teacher exams): ENG 3320 (film-based courses only), COMM 33245, COMM 3325, or ART 4337

For all freshmen bringing Fall 2004: UNIV 1301

Grades 8 - 12 Certification with ESL endorsement

Students seeking certification with an ESL endorsement should follow the degree plan above with the following changes:

1. Instead of the 6 hours listed under “Other English Electives,” students should take the following 9 hours: ENG 3321, ENG 4328, and ENG 33xx/43xx[ESL];
2. Students should take EDBE 3324; and
3. It is recommended that students do their minor in a foreign language.

Teacher Certification with English as a second teaching field (Grades 8 - 12)

Students who minor in English with teacher certification need to take the following 24 hours of coursework in English: 1301, 1302, 23xx (required Core Courses)
