About Us

Welcome to the Department of English at the University of Texas-Pan American.

Our dedicated, energetic, and diverse faculty offer a wide variety of courses for undergraduate English majors and minors, as well as for elective seekers interested in literary studies, applied linguistics, creative writing, and rhetoric, composition, and literacy studies. The department also has degree plans in English Language Arts for students interested in becoming middle school or high school teachers.

At the graduate level, we offer a Master of Arts in English, with tracks in Literary and Cultural Studies or Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy Studies; a Master of Arts in English as a Second Language; and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. We also have a number of teaching assistantships to support the work of graduate students in these programs. MA and MAESL graduates pursue careers in teaching or advanced doctoral graduate work in English or Applied Linguistics. MFA graduates pursue careers as writers, editors, teachers, and other careers related to creative writing.

As you can tell from our main page, we support and sponsor a number of activities for our students, faculty, and larger community, including, but not limited to, a host of open events with guest speakers and writers, Sigma Tau Delta (the English Honor Society), the student Creative Writing group Sin Fronteras, and Gallery, a student literary magazine.

Please contact our staff or one of our academic advisors if you have questions concerning our programs and how you can be a part of them.
