Letty Valadez Garza: Off-camera
Letty Valadez Garza earned her bachelor's degree in Communication from Pan American University in 1983. She has worked as a news anchor and reporter at KRGV TV, Channel 5 for almost thirty years. Starting as an intern at the station in 1982, she worked her way up to become one of the first and most widely recognized female Hispanic news anchors in the Rio Grande Valley.
While reporting at KRGV, Letty started the Wednesday's Child programming feature, which promotes child adoption. She has been honored twice by the Texas House of Representatives for her volunteer work.
Letty's television career has afforded her many exciting travel opportunities throughout the United States. Her favorite city was Hollywood, California, where she conducted an interview with long-time idol, Donny Osmond.
Despite being approached by other offers, Letty admits that she is happy where she is at. “I'm at a happy place right now,” she adds.
Letty advises students thinking of applying to UTPA's Communication Department to “Go for it! Put yourself out there and explore the possibilities. You will be amazed at what you will find.”
