Timothy P. Mottet is professor and chair of the department of communication at the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA). He also holds the Henry and Margaret Hauser endowed chair in communication and is director of the Hauser communication research lab. Dr. Mottet teaches courses in instructional communication, organizational communication, communication leadership, communication training and development, and communication research methods and theory. He has a BA from William Jewell College, an MS from Boston University, and an EdD from West Virginia University.

Dr. Mottet’s research examines the intersections of communication, personality, and cognition and their application to instructional, organizational, and interpersonal contexts. He is currently investigating instructor communication behaviors as predictors of the widely reported math and science learning deficit among American high school students. He and his colleagues are also researching the communication effectiveness of pediatric trauma team members in hospital emergency rooms.

Dr. Mottet has presented papers at regional, national, and international conferences and his research appears in Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Communication Research Reports, Journal of Psychology, and Psychological Reports. He is a co-editor of the Handbook of Instructional Communication: Rhetorical and Relational Perspectives with Virginia P. Richmond and James C. McCroskey. He is also co-author of two popular communication textbooks Business and Professional Communication: Principles and Skills for Leadership and Training and Development: Enhancing Communication and Leadership Skills.

Dr. Mottet has been a visiting scholar at North Dakota State University and The University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he taught graduate seminars in Communication, Learning, and the Brain. He is the 2008 recipient of the UTPA College of Arts and Humanities’ Faculty Excellence Award in Research as well as the recipient of the Eastern Communication Association’s Past President’s Award recognizing his research, teaching, and service to the Communication Studies discipline. Between 2002-2006, he was listed among the top 20 most prolific researchers in the discipline.

Outside of the academy, Dr. Mottet enjoys international travel, scuba diving, fitness, ballet, and entertaining for friends.
