Literature for Critical Thinking

Summary

Help kids of all ages love reading while addressing the reading TEKS and fostering critical thinking. In this workshop participants will learn how to choose and use appropriate children’s and young adult literature. Participants will experience a variety of strategies that build on authentic literature and the TEKS in order to develop children’s critical thinking skills.

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will read and enjoy recent children’s literature.
  • Participants will connect authentic children’s and young adult literature to Reading/ELA TEKS.
  • Participants will explore various teaching strategies that build on literature to promote critical thinking.

Who Should Attend?

  • Classroom teachers, librarians and literacy coaches in grades 1-12.

Instructor

Dr. Janine M. Schall, Associate Professor

UTPA

Dr. Schall began teaching children to become better readers and to love books in Roma, TX. She has taught reading in a variety of settings in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Currently Dr. Schall is the Graduate Reading Coordinator in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas-Pan American.
